Better start for Local Index in 2020

A total of 2 026 637 shares were traded in 66 transactions on the Local Index of the NSX last month.

Jo-Maré Duddy – More than N$42.2 million worth of shares changed hands on the Local Index of the Namibian Stock Exchange (NSX) last month, just over N$7 million or about 20% more than in January 2019.

Trading, however, was still significant below the N$127.5 million recorded in January 2018.

Most of last month’s trading on the Local Index belonged to Namibian Breweries, clinching about N$33.54 million worth of deals.

SBN Holdings followed with about N$4.66 million, while some N$2.04 million of FirstRand Namibia’s shares changed hands. Letshego Holdings Namibia recorded total trading of around N$1.57 million.

Other companies on the Local Index which traded were: Capricorn Investment Group (N$257 768), Namibia Asset Management (N$114 718), Oryx Properties (N$19 500) and Paratus Namibia Holdings (N$15 415).

Only one company on the Local Index could end the month on a higher note. Namibia Asset Management closed January at 65c per share, 10c a piece or 18.2% higher than it started the month.

Nictus Holdings Namibia (N$1.60 per share), FirstRand Namibia (N$33.41) and SBN Holdings (N$9.20) all ended January unchanged.

Losers

The biggest loser on the Local Index last month was Letshego Holdings Namibia. The group’s share price tumbled 14.9% or 49c to close at N$2.80 a piece.

Oryx also had a tough month. The locally-listed property group ended January at N$19.50 per share, a drop of 74c or 3.7%.

Other companies which ended the month lower were NamBrew, Capricorn and Paratus. NamBrew closed at N$47.99 per share, down 28c or 0.58%.

Capricorn edged back by 6c per share or 0.39% to end January at N$15.19. Paratus closed at N$10.27 per share, 2c or 0.2% lower.

A total of 2 026 637 shares were traded in 66 transactions on the Local Index last month.

The index ended January at 606.77 points, 7.1 points or 1.16% lower than the previous month. In January 2019, the Local Index stood at 618.35 points and in January 2018 it was 604.91 points.

Overall Index

On the Overall Index of the NSX, more than N$1.06 billion was traded in total during the month under review, compared to about N$902 million and nearly N$1.2 billion in January 2019 and January 2018 respectively.

The Overall Index ended last month at 1 239.95 points, down 66.35 points or 5.08% from December.

The JSE All Share Index ended January at 56 079.50, dipping 1.76% from the previous month.

At the end of January, the total market capitalisation of the Overall Index exceeded N$1.8 trillion, while that of the Local Index was just below N$36 billion.
