Benefit from expos, farmers told
Kavango East farmers are urged to take advantage of a food expo under way at Rundu.
Farmers in Kavango East should attend the Food Namibia Trade Expo and Conference which takes place this week, the event's organiser, Manfried Likoro, has said.
The expo and conference takes place at Rundu on Friday and Saturday and will bring together stakeholders in government and the agro-food industry to discuss issues related to agriculture and sustainable food production in Namibia.
Likoro, the director of Food Namibia, told Nampa that this would be a good opportunity for farmers to connect with financial institutions.
“They can get help with funds for their farming practices to enable them to maximise their production in terms of food,” he said.
The expo will take place at the Kavango Convention Centre under the theme 'Food Security for a Healthy Nation' and is open to the public.
Likoro said the event would celebrate this year's good harvest as a culmination of Operation Werengendje, which aimed to assist and inspire Kavango East residents to produce their own crops and become self-sufficient and ensure food security in the region.
“This public-private partnership initiative is organised by the office of the governor in the Kavango East Region in collaboration with Food Namibia and will incorporate an exhibition and workshop sessions,” he said. Food Namibia is a public-private partnership initiative striving to bring major stakeholders in government and food producers under one umbrella.
Likoro said the expo will provide a unique business-to-business platform to showcase products and services in the local agriculture and food production industries.
Six constituencies in the region will use the Food Namibia platform to showcase their harvest, with a prize being awarded to the constituency that produced the most crops.
It has also attracted interest from other regions and exhibitors from Kavango West, Erongo, Oshikoto, Khomas, Omaheke and Omusati are expected to showcase their agricultural products.
Minister of agriculture, water and forestry John Mutorwa will officially open the expo, while the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and Small and Medium Enterprise Development, Gabriel Sinimbo, will be the main speaker at the conference.
So far, 34 exhibitors have registered to exhibit their agricultural products at the Kavango Convention Centre, while 36 vendors will exhibit in open tents.
Embassies from across the Southern African Development Community have been invited and a business delegation from Zimbabwe have confirmed their attendance.
There will also be food stalls, traditional performances and a kiddies' park.
