Beloved SA TV star dies
Veteran actor director Nyembezi Kunene has died after a long illness.
A family spokesman confirmed the legend’s passing.
He had been in a hospital near his home in Sebokeng for a month but was transferred to Lesedi hospital in Soweto just two days before he died.
Amongst some of Kunene’s better known roles, he was the security guard, Macingwane in the popular sitcom Emzini Wezinsizwa.
Some might remember him as the flamboyant Malume Jabulani on Generations.
Kunene is survived by his wife and four children.
Kunene’s son, Manqoba, has described his father as a great family man.
“He was a great man, and I think I’m speaking for all his children when I say that, he may have been a popular somebody when he was walking in the streets,” said the younger Kunene.
“But whenever he was home he always taught us to respect each other, love each other, work with each other, which is exactly what we are doing now.
“He would be so proud, so we have a legacy that’s so different from how South Africans perceive him, or how they have known him over the years. When he is home, he seats at his office, he writes all day, he loved his work, I mean I have never seen such dedication from one man. That’s the man he was, he was there whenever we needed him.”
