Beauty with a purpose
This week The Zone spoke to one of Namibia’s youngest yogis, who started her journey with yoga and meditation four years after the birth of her son, marking a paradigm shift in her life.
Beauty Boois, who hails from Windhoek, has so far managed to turn her business called Yoga By Beauty into a resounding success and has managed to set the yoga agenda in central Namibia by offering a reliable, targeted and meaningful service that her clients vow for.
When Beauty started Yoga By Beauty in 2014, she had no formal training and would host her yoga workshops and classes in public spaces where she didn’t need to pay rent or any other overheads. She saved up and started buying equipment with the support of some family members and a good friend who bought the first big batch of yoga mats.
Beauty earned a Marketing Management Certificate from Northlink College in Cape Town and she recently graduated with a degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Namibia.,
In terms of her yoga know-how, Beauty has done 200 hours of Yoga Teacher Training, and now olds a certificate from the Africa Yoga Project in Nairobi, Kenya, and recently completed 150 hours of Yoga Psychology training, and now also holds a certificate from Yoga Vidya Gurukul in India.
Boois, who gave birth to her son in 2011, says that she experienced a shift in perception when she became a mother.
“Everything became so clear to me. I literally saw myself for who I truly am; a healer, a nurturer and a seer. I realised that I was put on the planet to teach, to heal and to transform, not only in my son’s life but in the lives of everyone that I encounter. That’s how I became a yoga teacher, an entrepreneur, a psychology graduate and a highly spiritual person,” she says.
After that she built on her spiritual basis and learned to do some yoga and meditation to aid her in changing her life for the better. The dream for Yoga By Beauty has always been to create a hub that offers holistic health, relaxation and wellness products under one roof. “I would love to incorporate yoga into the various offerings as a form of therapy,” Beauty says.
She says growing up in Windhoek gave her the belief that anything is possible. “Windhoek is a place where you can literally create the reality that you desire for yourself because everything is so ripe and everybody is so ready for new and exciting things to hit the city.
“Sometimes things can be a little constricted by certain mindsets but I believe that that is the perfect breeding ground for people like me to emerge and expose our city to transformational ways of being, thinking and living.”
Beauty shared with The Zone some of her most rewarding experiences as a yoga teacher. She says being a yogi has allowed her to foster connections between and with people from different walks of life through the practice of yoga.
“I see people with brighter smiles, clearer skin, more energy and a zest for life, with newfound aspirations to be happy, to live healthily and to invest in themselves and their wellbeing because of yoga. That really pulls my heartstrings.”
Beauty says the idea that we come into this world with the gift of endless opportunities to build the life we desire for ourselves, and also to hit the reset button to start over and build ourselves up even after things have fallen apart, is simply a thing of magic for her.
Yoga By Beauty has been a lucrative venture, supporting Beauty through her student years and financing her lifestyle demands at this point in her life.
“I’m definitely looking to expand and make the business more profitable to support my lifestyle when I reach the next stage in my life, both personally and professionally. Ultimately the thing that is most lucrative when it comes to running my own business is that I get to be the boss, and I have the freedom to decide how I spend my time every day and that means the world to me.”
One of the challenges she experienced when she started Yoga By Beauty was finding a place where she could teach yoga. She also struggled to become financially savvy.
Beauty graduated in clinical psychology from the University of Namibia this year and noted some of the challenges she faced as mother, teacher and student.
“Considering the fact that I strive to be a straight-A student, my biggest challenge was to maintain good grades while raising my son who is now five years old. Finding that balance between being a good mother and making time to be a good student was challenging.
“There were many times that I thought about dropping out because I really just wanted to start making money, and overcoming that desire that was another challenge I faced.”
Beauty is passionate and vocal about the struggles that young mothers face in Namibia.
“In my opinion there is too much discrimination and shaming and not enough support systems in place for most single or young mothers. Also, the fact that the fathers are barely made to feel the same way, or are not held to the same levels of accountability, is pretty sexist and frankly doesn’t make any sense because it takes two people to make a baby,” she says.
Beauty believes that every challenge is an opportunity and being mentally flexible and open to learning has been her saving grace.
She says as business owner she values consistency, passion, growth and connection. Beauty is not shy to admit that “proper planning prevents poor performance”, which has become her personal motto.
“Balance is a very important factor when it comes to health and wellness, so balance is a priority for me; it’s something that I take very seriously.”
Her plans are to complete her clinical psychology internship to become a registered psychologist. Her ambition is to go into private practice and eventually doing a master’s degree.
Her message to the youth is: “Move, breathe and live with an unfaltering belief in yourself, in your passion and your goals no matter what they are or how much people try and negate what you believe is your destiny. Always take yourself seriously and live confidently so that others can see the standard with which to treat you. Every day do something that adds value to your goals.”
