Jesse Jackson Kauraisa WINDHOEK Veteran Golden Arrows goalkeeper Maximilian Mbaeva commenced with his preseason campaign at his club on Saturday. The 32-year old former Brave Warriors number one is eager to fight for a place in the club’s first team after falling down the pecking order.Mbaeva spent his holiday in Windhoek and Gobabis before he boarded a plane back to South Africa earlier this month.“We are now in Mpumalanga and we commenced with our training on Saturday in preparation for another season.“I know I did not have a fruitful season last time around but that is all behind me now.“I am grateful for this club and there is no better way to show them how grateful I am by doing my best during the 2021/22 season,” Mbaeva said. Veteran statusMbaeva has been part of Arrows since making his debut for the club in August 2014.He is among the few remaining Arrows players who have been part of the club for seven years.It was speculated that the former African Stars footballer could be on his way out after last season, but the club has maintained its trust in the experienced hands of the goalkeeper, who was once a first choice for the ‘Abafana Bes'thende’ (The Backheel Boys).Golden Arrows finished the 2020/21 season fourth, with 20 points behind winners Mamelodi Sundowns. “The boys had a decent campaign and this will just work well for us going into the new season. The mood here is that we want to do better than we did last season and that sounds just perfect for a club that was fourth.“I will be here to continue motivating and helping out the younger players as I also hope to get in the favours of the coach,” Mbaeva said.During the 2020-21 season, Mbaeva was seen on the bench for the first time in their second-last match against Kaizer Chiefs.
