Attempted hijacking, robbery on Western Bypass

A family of four German tourists survived an attempted hijacking and/or robbery on the Western Bypass at roughly 13:30. According to eye witness reports, the family of four had just landed in Namibia and were en route to Etosha National Park in their rented double-cab bakkie. On the Western Bypass, just across from Paaltjies, a silver Polo which was following them, indicated there was something wrong with the vehicle. The unsuspecting tourists stopped and were attacked by three assailants, eye witnesses related to Namibian Sun. The assaulted the father and demanded money from him. The driver of a bus travelling behind the Polo noticed the commotion and stopped to come to the tourists' aid. The driver of the bus was said to be armed and fired two warning shots. Two of the three robbers fled in the vehicle leaving one behind (pictured) who was said to be held at gunpoint by the bus driver until the police arrived. The robbers fled with the bakkie's keys. There is no indication of how seriously the German man was injured in the assault.Bystanders told Namibian Sun, the family was visibly shaken and determined to return to Germany immediately.STAFF REPORTER
