Archers qualify for 2017 world games

The 2017 World Archery Games will see Namibians compete at the event, following their qualification after the just-ended Africa Archery Championship in Windhoek. The Archery Association of Namibia’s Frank Bockmühl told Sport Wrap that the country still had to work on the Recurve division where archers were able to qualify for the Olympic Games. “The archer we had in that division is a junior and was maybe too young to compete against the older ones but it is just a matter of development that we will soon speak the same language,” he said. He noted that there was a lot of development taking place at the association and was optimistic that in few years there would be a lot of archers competing. “There is a lot of work that has to be done, but looking at where we were four years ago when we only had about one archer and now we have more than four, then one can really see that we are growing,” he said. He said Namibia continues to be among the powerhouses of archery in Africa. “Our Compound men have made it to the World Games in Poland next year and all the archers have to be on their toes because selection will be based on rankings,” he said. He said the association had received positive comments from the associations that were present, which he described as a good for the development of the game in the country. He further described the championship as one of the best-attended archery events in Africa. The championships took place at the Deutscher Turn und Sportverein (DTS) sports grounds in Windhoek from Friday to Sunday. About 85 archers from 14 African countries participated in the three-day event. The other competing countries were South Africa, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Chad, Malawi, Tunisia, Libya, Kenya, Mauritius, Morocco, Benin and Algeria. The championships served as a qualifying competition for Recurve bow archers to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, while the Compound bow archers competed to qualify for the 2017 Archery World Cup in Wroclaw, Poland. Namibia won 10 medals at the championship. KAINO NGHITONGO
