Anger grows over Intercape security

A Namibian passenger has expressed concern about safety on Intercape buses following a recent armed robbery that occurred on one of the company's buses on the Johannesburg-Harare route.

According to Fenni Nghikevali she witnessed theft on an Intercape bus on a recent trip to Tsumeb.

Nghikevali shared her experience on Namibian Sun's Facebook page in response to an article on the Johannesburg robbery on 7 December.

According to Nghikevali she was travelling on an Intercape bus to Tsumeb. In Okahandja the passengers disembarked to buy food. There was nobody guarding the bus and thieves entered the bus and stole valuable items, including a laptop.”

Nghikevali said they spent nearly an hour at the police station to provide statements.

“It was very inconvenient. I understand that certain incidents are unforeseen, but Intercape needs to tighten their security as in yesterday. They already lost me as a customer and many more on that bus. Their reputation is at great risk,” she wrote.

Nghikevali did not say when the incident happened.

Another reader, Amanda Gaoses Neé, posted that the laptop was recovered by Okahandja residents without the assistance of the police.

“But Intercape should really tighten their security. I went to the service [station] to view the video footage, and the drivers were not noticing what was going on around the bus,” she wrote.

After several questions were sent to Intercape regarding the bus robbery in South Africa, the company confirmed on Friday that no arrests had been made.

“The matter is under investigation and the South African Police are dealing with the investigation and at this stage we cannot comment further,” Intercape Media said.
