AC gym could close up shop

Jesse Jackson Kauraisa WINDHOEKOwner of the African Connection (AC) Boxing and Fitness Academy, Immanuel 'Imms' Moses, says there is possibility the gym will have to vacate its premises. Moses cited the lack of activity at the gym and his inability continue paying rent, with all gym activities banned since the end of March due to the coronavirus outbreak and the subsequent countrywide lockdown.Currently paying N$12 000 per month in rent, the past two months have put Moses between a rock and a hard place. Negotiations“I do not have a problem with the building owner because he is a good person, but the truth is, I will not be able to afford paying for the building while there are no activities.“Maybe we will only get another place after the measures are lifted. “We generate money from boxing activities and also gym sessions but all that is now prohibited. I will therefore not be able to afford the place,” Moses said.The boxing trainer said he also understands that the landlord has to pay his bond.Government must intervene Moses is calling on the government to take the situation in to consideration and come up with ways to save gyms that are suffering losses from the lockdown measures.“We know that some gyms operate from government buildings and they do not pay a cent, but we who pay rent are in trouble.“I hope that the government will really find a rescue plan because things are becoming more difficult,” he noted. Lukas fightMoses, who has close to 90 boxers signed to his academy, has revealed that the fight between Sakaria Lukas and Jesse Magdeleno of the USA is shrouded in uncertainty. “There is a possibility that the USA will introduce indoor boxing and our fight could be slated for somewhere in September.“The problem that we are now having is that all countries have closed their doors for people to come in and we do not know when this will be lifted.”He added that the only person who might be lucky to fight when the USA's plans for indoor boxing succeed is Julius Indongo, who is currently in the USA.
