Abandoned building up in flames

KEETMANSHOOP
An abandoned building in Keetmanshoop that used to belong to the Nafau trade union burned down a week ago.
The building had been abandoned for many years and municipal services had been disconnected.
According to the Keetmanshoop municipality, the local fire brigade rushed to the burning building and established that the fire was in the roof of the building.
They had to fight their way into the locked building and it took almost two hours to get the fire under control.
The structure of the front block is completely destroyed.
Although the scene was searched to obtain evidence that could help determine the cause of the fire, these efforts yielded no success.
No fatalities or injuries were reported.

A security officer of Laubser Security said the building was vacant and was used by homeless people as a shelter.
According to Keetmanshoop municipal spokesperson Dawn Kruger, the building does not belong to the municipality.
“All efforts were made to trace the legal owners but to no avail. Efforts are still ongoing.”
“Once traced, further steps ought to be taken by the owner and their insurer,” she said when asked what the council planned to do with the building.
