A new day for basketball

The newly elected Khomas Basketball Association (KBA) has promised to revolutionise the sport in the country by taking it to the people.Speaking to Nampa last week, Nigel Mubita, the incoming president of KBA, said in order to achieve this, he and his executive committee will start using the United Nations (UN) Plaza courts in Katutura as a redress for the dependence on University of Namibia's gym hall, while also exposing the game to the masses.“We would like to use other venues, especially UN Plaza which is in the heart of Katutura and is along one of the main roads in Windhoek. It will be good advertising for the sport and hopefully it will expose the sport [so that] more teenagers can take up the sport,” Mubita said.Mubita was elected into office for a four-year term late last year, together with Anthony Auchab as vice-president, while Bukky Onwudinjo was elected as treasurer.Michael Kavalata was elected as secretary-general, while Loise Negumbo is the marketing officer. Mpumelelo Hlabangana is the incoming development officer, while Nigel Muwaningwa will serve as the competition director.On the composition of the executive team, Mubita said his team is spoiled with experience.“Financially, we are in safe hands as we have a chartered accountant as a treasurer. That means we will be able to account for all the funds that we get and use. In development we have Hlabangana, who has over 30 years [of experience] in basketball,” he said, adding that the secretary-general also comes with a wealth of expertise.Mubita added that, as a committee, they will strive to develop more basketball coaches, officials and referees as these are important foundation pieces of the sport they wish to transform into a top five sport by the end of their tenure.Other goals that the committee has set include having teams from Okahandja, Otjiwarongo or Rehoboth joining what is the most established basketball league in the country, as well as developing young players.Mubita outlined financial mismanagement as one of the challenges the committee wishes to address so as to prove to the corporate world and government that they are an organised body and are taking a positive direction. Something he hopes will help them get sponsors on board.Mubita further indicated that the 2018 basketball season would kick off in mid-February.“There will be a pre-season tournament which will get the people going. After that, we will commence with the regular season on Good Friday. Unfortunately we do not have sponsors yet. The Basketball community has to cater for itself for now,” he stressed, adding that clubs may be required to pay registration fees for now.NAMPA
