A Brighter Future Awaits – to 2050 and Beyond
The Legacy Continues
A premature closure for Namdeb would have had a negative impact on Namibia’s socio-economic development. Impacting both employment and livelihoods. In this feature of the Legacy Continues, we reflect on how the Long-Term Plan was achieved and highlight some of the opportunities.
Namdeb’s Long-Term Plan
The successful attainment of the Long-Term Plan (LTP) is a result of determination by the Namdeb leadership team as well as concerted efforts and engagement between the two shareholders, the Namibian government and De Beers Group, who believed in the potential of the mine. To enable this plan, Namdeb sought royalty remission from the Namibian Government to enable it to develop an economically sustainable business plan to lengthen the life of its land-based operations which was facing closure at the end of 2022.
The royalty remission enables capital to be invested in the operations that will support a Life of Mine (LoM) extension of up to twenty (20) years for Namdeb’s land-based operations, delivering substantial long-term economic benefit for Namibia, continuity of employment and benefit for community partners. The new plan positively impacts Namibia from a socio-economic development perspective with direct benefits to the communities impacted by Namdeb’s operations and the nation at large. During the official announcement on the 14 October 2021, Honourable Tom Alweendo, Minister of Mines and Energy, is quoted to have said that the Life of Mine extension contributes to the achievement of goals and objectives outlined in the National development Plans and the Harambe Prosperity Plan II.
The objective of the LTP was to develop a robust re-capitalized, profitable and sustainable WCCR & Casino – Oryx room, business solution to expand and ensure the continued operation of the Namdeb Southern Coastal Mine (SCM) beyond its planned LoM of 2022. The LTP, creates a sustainable and profitable long-term business solution that ensures the continued operation of the SCM with proven technology. The successful implementation of the LTP necessitates the importance of fostering a safe and supportive environment that encourages all Namdeb employees to be part of co-creating a safety culture to secure the exciting future.
Long-Term Plan Benefits
With the premature closure of Namdeb now avoided, the LTP provides Namdeb the opportunity to continue positively impacting the socio-economic development of Namibia with direct benefits to the //Karas region and in particular the town of Oranjemund. Namdeb’s Employee Value Proposition is further enriched as the LTP enables the focus on long-term health care and education solutions for Oranjemund town.
Namdeb will in this regard strengthen collaboration and partnerships with key stakeholders to deliver on social progression work that supports the Oranjemund Town Transformation work. It should be noted that the LTP has provided an extended period during which Oranjemund is enabled to diversify and develop new economic activities whilst opportunities for home ownership are progressed.
The retention of approximately 2100 jobs as a result of the life of mine extension means that both Namdeb and Contractor employees can look forward to working until retirement age and throughout their employment tenure, they can contribute towards the successful operations of Namdeb whilst sustaining livelihoods.
To 2050 and Beyond
The LTP enhances the good work that Namdeb has already embarked on which contributes to ensuring a better tomorrow. It further contributes to earning trust in natural diamonds as Namdeb is enabled to continue creating a sustainable future and leave a lasting positive legacy.
