A total of 273 suspects were arrested in connection with wildlife crimes this year and 144 cases were registered.

This is according to the environment ministry, whose festive season message urges people to remain vigilant against wildlife crimes such as illegal hunting and trade in wildlife and wildlife products.

“Considering that this is a holiday season, poachers may view it the right time to perpetrate their crimes, however the public should be reassured that measures have been put in place to ensure our national parks and other conservation areas are sufficiently guarded with intensified anti-poaching patrols throughout the festive season,” said the spokesperson of the ministry, Romeo Muyunda.

He further encouraged all Namibians and visitors to the country to observe environmental protection during this season.

Littering

According to him littering is one of the most visible and persistent environmental issues and costs Namibia a substantial amount of resources every year to clean up and repair the damage it causes.

Muyunda said the festive season is characterised by fun activities that generate huge amounts of waste, which most of the time is disposed of irresponsibly.

The ministry encouraged people to protect the environment and keep Namibia clean.

“Trends where garbage is thrown out of cars or from specific gatherings pollutes the roadsides, our towns, villages, settlements, farms, conservancies, national parks and the natural environment and should be discouraged,” said Muyunda.

He added that motorists should carry their rubbish to a waste disposal bin.

Clean beaches

Muyunda said many people flock to the coastal towns during the festive season and most often a lot of litter is observed along the beaches and dunes.

“Our coastal towns are surrounded by national parks. Littering is harmful to the ecosystem. Therefore, as we enjoy our visits and all related activities in and around the coastal towns, or any other activities in and around our coastal towns or any other place in the country let us avoid littering at all times.”

Muyunda added that littering and irresponsible waste disposal can contaminate the soil, air and water with toxins, chemicals and disease-causing bacteria agents.

He further said that Namibia experienced disturbing veld fires this year that have caused significant damage to the environment. More than 2.5 million hectares have burned since the start of the fire season.

“We wish to remind our citizens that the fire season continues until January and therefore preventive measures should continue to be observed during this festive season.”

Muyunda said people should ensure that fires are fully extinguished after picnics, braais and other activities where fire is used.
