23 arrests for drinking and driving
Twenty-three people were arrested for drinking and driving at the coast over the weekend.
Erongo deputy police commissioner Erastus Iikuyu confirmed that 23 drivers were arrested in Walvis Bay during a joint operation by municipal and Nampol traffic officers and police reservists between Friday 22:30 and Sunday 05:41.
Iikuyu said operations of this nature had started in all towns and would continue throughout the festive season.
The first arrest was made in Nangolo Mbumba Drive on Friday. A man (34) was found driving a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of liquor or narcotic drugs.
A second person (58) was arrested in Rikumbi Kandanga Road. Another person (29) was arrested in Civic Centre Street. The fourth person (28) was arrested in Sam Nujoma Avenue on Saturday.
Other arrests for drinking and driving followed near Namport, in Sam Nujoma Avenue, Hannah Mupetami Road and at Circumferential Road.
One person (39) was arrested in Mandume Ndemufayo Street in Swakopmund on Saturday.
Eleven of the persons arrested between Saturday and Sunday were caught in the town area, with two arrests made in Kuisebmond.
In another incident, a 17-year-old was arrested in connection with the theft of a vehicle engine and gearbox in Walvis Bay.
According to Iikuyu the suspect allegedly removed the items valued at N$70 000 from a yard next to the garage at house number 4360 in Divot Street in Fairways on Thursday.
“He sold the stolen engine and gearbox to a second-hand shop situated in the area of Cymot. The items were recovered and the suspect will appear in court today. The investigation continues to find out whose vehicle was used to transport the stolen items to the buyer,” said Iikuyu.
