A total of 21 fires was reported in the Windhoek area from 27 September to 7 October.
Of these, 10 fires were reported within the city’s suburbs and 11 on farmlands.
City of Windhoek spokesperson Lydia Amutenya said the recent veld fires in the area have destroyed a reasonably large area.
“The exact size is unknown at this stage, because the operation is still ongoing and, as a result, the extent can only be determined afterward. The focus now is just to extinguish fires.”
She said small fires occurred between the suburbs of Khomasdal, Dorado Park and Cimbebasia, while large fires were reported around Windhoek farmlands.
This included Elisenheim, Dobra, the Eros mountains, Kaiser Wilhellem, Satan’s Loch, Daan Viljoen, Heja Lodge, Farm Reinkenstein and Omeya.
The City will continue to sensitise the public about prevention tips and precautionary measures to be taken in cases of veld fires, she said.
Fires spread fast
“The vegetation is combustible and during this season when it is windy, the fire can spread easily from one area to another, thus it is important to take precautions and to be prepared for veld fires.”
Amutenya further encouraged the public to clean their surroundings, at least three metres from their boundaries.
She pointed out that fires spread fast during this dry and windy weather and they therefore need to make sure that the vegetation is not combustible and should be far from properties.
More than 2.6 million hectares across the country had already been burned by veld fires since the start of Namibia’s fire season in May.
