2017 Tara Rally taking place next week
The 49th edition of the Tara Rally will take place at the Tony Rust Race Track outside Windhoek on 17 and 18 November.
The rally was launched here on Tuesday, with close to 20 teams expected to register.
Richard Slamet, a driver and chairperson of the Windhoek Motor Club, invited all fans to come and witness an exciting competition.
“It will be fun and exciting; we will have 19 stages this year instead of the 21 from last year. This will make it more competitive and interesting for the fans,” he said.
Registration opened on Wednesday and will close on 17 November just before the race starts.
The rally is expected to take place from 13:00 until 21:30 on the first day and from 08:00 till 14:00 the following day.
The organisers say they are expecting at least 20 entries, with one South African team having indicated interest in the event, while the rest will be Namibians.
This year's event is the 49th edition of the rally and the organisers say it will be a trial run for the 50th anniversary celebrations in 2018.
Last year's competition was won by South African duo, Japie van Niekerk and Robin Houghton.
It was their third consecutive victory but indications are they will not be back to defend their title.
The Tara Rally is Namibia's longest-running international sporting event, having started in 1969.
