1 000 runners anticipated for street mile
The sixth edition of the Omaruru Erongo Powersave Street Mile will take place this coming weekend.
Organisers expect over 1 000 athletes to take part in the event at the town.
Those wanting to prove their mettle, including a host of veterans, will challenge each other for top prizes.
Erongo Powersave has committed N$90 000 towards the event, while Pasta Polana will dish out goodies to the value of N$25 000.
The main races of the day will be the senior men's and women's categories, which will be over 1.6km.
The winners of the senior categories (men and women aged between 20 and 39) will walk away with N$5 000 in prize money each, while the junior (boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 19) race winners will get
N$3 000 each.
The veteran category (40-49) winners will scoop N$3 000 each, while the masters (50+) will take home N$1 500 each for coming first.
Erongo sport officer Berthold Karumendu lauded all the sponsors that made the street mile possible.
“This event would have not been possible without the support of our sponsors that have been with us for so long and those that came on board now.
“We are expecting athletes from all the regions to come in their numbers for this great spectacle.
“I spoke to some athletes from Botswana, but they are yet to confirm their participation.
“Everyone must come and enjoy the fun and testing run this coming weekend,” Karumendu said.
The sports ministry will offer free transport for all participants, while Coca-Cola is the main drinks sponsor of the competition.
Senior sport officer in the sports ministry, Letu Hamhola, spoke highly of the event.
“It is important to show our appreciation for such events because it is these endeavours that helps us to plough back into the community,” Hamhola said.
