Govt clarifies veterans’ resettlement
The Office of the Prime Minister has clarified a cabinet resolution, which purported to show that 70% of resettlement farms would in the future go to war veterans and their dependants. Secretary to Cabinet George Simataa said in fact 70% of the land share should benefit war veterans, their dependants and dispossessed communities, and that no land has been exclusively been reserved for war veterans. “In order to enhance the practicality and realisation of this resolution, cabinet during its meeting held 20 November 2018 further resolved that reference to war veterans of the liberation struggle and their dependants should be limited to veterans from the affected communities in respect to the 70:30 ratios under the resettlement programme for the benefit of land dispossessed communities,” the statement reads. “Subsequent to the above, it means beneficiary veterans of the liberation struggle and their dependants contemplated in this resolution should be veterans from the affected communities.”
