Your CV speaks before you do

Your CV speaks before you doBe able to prove what is written on paperIn a labour market where every opportunity matters, attention to detail, preparation and honesty may be the difference between being overlooked and being shortlisted. In Namibia’s fiercely competitive job market, a CV is more than a document. It is often a candidate’s first interview. With youth unemployment recorded at 44.4% in the 2023 Population and Housing Census Labour Force Report, every vacancy attracts many hopeful applicants. In such an environment, small mistakes can carry big consequences. From a recruitment perspective, it remains surprising how many applications are submitted without a final review. Incorrect cellphone numbers, outdated email addresses, missing qualifications and old, irrelevant information appear far too often. These may seem like minor administrative oversights, but they can prevent a recruiter from contacting an otherwise suitable candidate.Your contact details are not an afterthought. They are the bridge between you and a potential employer. If that bridge is broken, your application may go nowhere.A CV should also never be treated as a standard document sent unchanged to every employer. Candidates need to tailor their CVs to the specific opportunity. This does not mean changing facts or overstating experience. It means reading the vacancy carefully and ensuring that the most relevant qualifications, skills and achievements are visible. If a role requires recruitment experience, show it clearly. If it calls for administration, training, stakeholder engagement or analytical ability, ensure that your relevant experience is easy to identify. Recruiters should not have to search through several pages of general information to discover why a candidate may be suitable.Candidates should also think carefully about references. Reference checks are commonly part of the selection process. While they may not always be required at the application stage, job seekers should have appropriate referees ready – people who know their work, have agreed to be listed and can speak credibly about their capabilities. But a strong CV is only the beginning. Shortlisting is not the finish line; it is an invitation to prove what is written on paper. An interview should confirm the picture your CV presents. If you claim strong communication skills, demonstrate them. If you list leadership, problem-solving or project achievements, be prepared to give clear examples. There is little more concerning to a recruiter than a candidate whose interview performance does not match their CV.Before clicking "submit", pause. Check your details. Update your information. Read the instructions. Tailor your CV. Then prepare for the interview. In a labour market where every opportunity matters, attention to detail, preparation and honesty may be the difference between being overlooked and being shortlisted.-Martha Ethiindje Iwata is an industrial psychology enthusiast with a degree in industrial/organisational psychology from the University of Namibia.
