Twapewa-Ashihe Mungoba: Unam’s SRC president on leadership

Twapewa-Ashihe Mungoba, the student representative council (SRC) president at the University of Namibia (UNAM) and a final-year law student, is driven by a passion for influence and change – qualities that seamlessly align with her academic pursuits and leadership role.Mungoba believes that a career in law offers a platform to shape minds, policies and societal norms.“Influence is one of the reasons I chose to study law,” she said.Her aspiration to exert a positive influence is evident in her leadership as SRC president, where she aims to inspire her peers through her conduct and decisions.The importance of reading, a skill honed during her law studies, has been crucial in her role. “You need to read, read and read,” she emphasised.Understanding university policies and regulations also enables her to lead effectively and assist students with accurate information and guidance.Balancing multiple responsibilities has been another key lesson for Mungoba.As a student, SRC president and intern at Sanlam, she has learned to prioritise and manage her time efficiently.“You need to water every aspect of your life,” she said.Managing pressure Mungoba’s journey has not been without challenges. The academic pressure of law school, with its demanding schedule of tests, assignments and exams, has been her most significant hurdle.She credits her support system, particularly her study group, for helping her manage this pressure.“Friends and study buddies are essential,” she said.Connecting to othersCommunication is another critical aspect of her leadership strategy. Mungoba believes that effective communication is vital for addressing student concerns and managing expectations.“A leader who does not communicate is a disadvantage,” she said.Transparency and honesty in conveying information to students are priorities in her leadership style.Outside her formal duties, Mungoba finds solace in spending time with friends and family. “I’m a social butterfly,” she said.Her favourite quote, 'Seize the day', reflects her approach to life and leadership. “Every day is a new day to start over,” she said.Mungoba’s achievements as SRC president are numerous, but her proudest moments come from daily interactions with students.“Helping students solve their issues is my biggest achievement,” she said.To aspiring student leaders, Mungoba offers candid advice: “Don’t do it if you aren’t ready to commit.”However, the fulfilment of serving and making a difference is invaluable. “If you can commit to the cause, go for it,” she encouraged.
