Tips for a successful job interview

Nankali Kamwanga
Although going to a job interview might be nerve-racking, you can turn anxiety into confidence by making sure to prepare properly. The following three simple tips can provide important guidance that can help you ace your next interview:

1. Research the company: “Understanding the company and your role in great detail will not only give you valuable insights on the company's culture and values but also help you align your skills and achievements to best suit the position,” said Heleni Amadhila, a senior public relations, stakeholder, and communications consultant at Old Mutual.

Candidates should do thorough research on the company while familiarising themselves with its background. Understand the company's goals and accomplishments over the last few years, its standing in the industry and any challenges that it may be experiencing. “Researching companies demonstrates genuine interest and allows candidates to tailor their responses to align with the company's needs and culture,” said Julia Kadhikwa, CEO and founder of Olive Entertainment Agency.

2. Know your story: “Candidates should be able to articulate their professional journey clearly and concisely,” said Kadhikwa, speaking from a CEO’s perspective. This entails showcasing outstanding accomplishments and experiences relevant to the job and displaying a love for their work. “When preparing for an interview, try, where possible, to avoid giving generic responses to questions. Instead, give answers that tell a story because people relate to stories, and they are often more memorable. This will help you stand out from the other candidates," Amadhila advised.

3. Highlight teamwork skills: “Specifically, in the entertainment industry, collaboration is key,” said Kadhikwa. Highlight situations where you managed creative differences, collaborated with various teams or made a positive impact on projects through teamwork.

Display your capacity for flexibility and achievement in high-intensity and fast-paced work situations common to many industries, among them the entertainment industry.

You may improve your chances of getting the job and gain more confidence by using these strategies in your preparation. Keep in mind that every interview is an opportunity to learn, so remember what works and improve your strategy for future interviews. “A well-prepared candidate appears confident and competent, leaving a positive impression,” said Kadhikwa.
