New talent at GIPF: Elly Shipena joins as investment analyst

Elly Shipena joined the treasury division at the Government Institutions Pension Fund (GIPF) as an investment research analyst in July. From the start, he has focused on supporting the team with market research, analysing investment opportunities and delivering strategic insights across asset classes. Shipena described the transition as an exciting step into a role that aligns perfectly with his academic background and passion for financial markets.Before joining GIPF, Shipena worked as an assistant portfolio manager intern at Capricorn Asset Management. A typical workday for Shipena involves reviewing market trends, analysing economic data and assessing investment opportunities across different asset classes. He prepares reports and presentations to support decision-making and frequently engages in discussions with colleagues in the treasury division about strategy and risk management. His position requires a balance between analytical work and collaboration.Shipena attributes his success to a disciplined, research-driven mindset.While his academic training has instilled a strong foundation in financial analysis, he believes his commitment to adding value through aligning investment decisions with broader goals, such as Namibianisation of the financial services industry, sets him apart. This purpose-driven approach keeps him focused and impactful.Conducive work environment Reflecting on his achievements, Shipena highlighted completing both his undergraduate and honours degrees in finance, which laid the foundation for his career. Progressing through the CFA programme to Level 3 stands out as another milestone. He also expressed pride in quickly integrating into the Treasury division and contributing to discussions and analysis that influence decision-making.Shipena further explained that the first 30 working days came with challenges, including a steep learning curve, familiarising himself with internal systems and adapting to the fund’s investment philosophy and pace of decision-making. However, he credits the collaborative culture, open discussions with colleagues and access to resources and mentorship for helping him perform at his best. Shipena also believes his position allows for a healthy work-life balance, despite the fast-paced and intellectually demanding environment. He noted that the fund recognises the importance of employee well-being. Outside of work, he continues to make time for kickboxing, reading, and travel, which helps him stay energised and maintain perspective.
