Living out his dream
Saving lives by spreading information about road safety
Abner Iitumba was raised in the village of Oshikulufitu after being born in the Omusati Region. He went to Oneeya Combined School for his primary education, and in 2000, he finished at Eengedjo Senior Secondary School.
On 20 July 2001, he enlisted in the Namibian Police Force in Windhoek. He obtained his Namibia College of Open Learning (Namcol) level four certificate. He graduated with a level five diploma in public relations from the University of Namibia (Unam), and a level six diploma in education for development. He also has a bachelor's degree in arts in youth and community development from Namcol on Learning Apart.
Iitumba was officially appointed at the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund in July and he commenced his duty on 18 July. He was appointed as a senior injury and accident prevention officer. In his new position, he deals with information dissemination concerning road safety. He describes his first week of work as excellent because his co-workers were friendly and they worked well as a team. He appreciated the warm welcome from his colleagues and the leadership at the fund.
Challenges and accomplishments
Speaking to Careers, he said although he hasn't faced many obstacles yet, things won't always go according to plan. Highlights from his recent appointment include being able to visit a bus terminal and carrying out the GreenDot operations, interacting with road users and conducting publication education awareness initiatives with his colleagues at the fund.
He also got the opportunity to meet with various stakeholders, including the road authority and traffic coordinators, whom he will continue to work closely with in this new position at the fund. Additionally, Iitumba has started conducting public education sessions on road safety on local radio programmes. He added that he is eager to comprehend MVA Fund's policies and code of ethics, as well as to learn more about how to influence people's mindsets and human behaviour in the context of preventing traffic accidents.
He said he has always been concerned about saving lives and spreading knowledge about road safety, hence he selected this line of work.
“I have always wanted to work with the MVA Fund and I am grateful for the opportunity to live out my dream.”
His favourite aspects of public education include radio, field work and his amiable co-workers in communication.
“I wish all Namibians safe driving. Always rest when you are tired, prepare for your journey well in advance and avoid driving at night where possible. Also avoid driving under the influence of alcohol,” he said.
