Journalism intern learns ‘by actually doing the work'

"One of the things I appreciate most about this experience is that I am not just observing. I am being given the opportunity to participate, take on responsibilities and learn by actually doing the work."That is how Ndapandula Lilonga describes her internship at My Zone, where the media and communication honours student is already juggling reporting, hosting and content creation. While completing her honours degree at the University of Namibia, Lilonga is gaining hands-on experience in the industry as a journalist, TV host and media intern at My Zone, under Network Media Hub (NMH) in Windhoek.“I have always enjoyed communicating with people and telling stories,” Lilonga told Careers.“I believe the media has the power to inform, educate, inspire and give people a platform to share their experiences.”Her internship has allowed her to move beyond the theories learned in the classroom and experience the realities of working in a fast-paced media environment. Her responsibilities include conducting interviews, researching and writing stories, hosting, assisting with filming, creating content, attending events and contributing to various My Zone projects. One of the highlights of her internship has been the opportunity to host What’s Cooking, a show where people from different industries share insights into their professions while preparing one of their favourite meals. The show combines food and career storytelling.“Being in front of the camera and interviewing different people has helped me grow tremendously in confidence and communication,” she says.Although she is still at the start of her career, Lilonga has already learned that working in media requires more than academic knowledge. Dealing with deadlines, pressure, changing plans and different personalities has taught her the importance of professionalism, teamwork and adaptability.“At university, you learn the theories and principles, but at work you learn how to deal with real people, deadlines, pressure and unexpected situations,” she says. “I think starting early gives me the chance to learn, make mistakes and improve while I am still discovering the kind of media professional I want to become."Her advice to other young people looking to enter the industry is to be proactive and willing to learn.“Do not wait for opportunities to come to you; actively look for them and put yourself out there,” she said. “Be willing to start small, ask questions, learn from mistakes and take every task seriously.”Her career may only be starting, but the experience she is gaining now could become the foundation for a long-term future in Namibian media.
