Designing his way to the top
Hanekom graduated from Windhoek High School after attending Suiderhof Primary School. He has always been captivated by the arts and visual effects, so when he heard that NMH had an opening in 2020, he applied.
To his surprise, he was offered an internship that lasted six months. His job description initially included overseeing the editorial team's structure and workflow, as well as the workflow of advertisements and the processes they undergo. Then he was given the chance to join the editorial staff on a full-time basis. Hanekom emphasises that he felt incredibly fortunate and blessed at that time.
"I was excited and looked forward to working with a creative team," he said. The first few days, he said, were fairly laid-back as he was shown the ropes. As time went on, his ability for effective learning amazed the team.
Challenges
Although he may occasionally run out of inspiration, he always manages to get back on track because this is what he is destined to do. Making errors will always be a challenge, but so is recovering from them. He also has to deal with the challenge of being a graphic designer, which requires him to make content appealing.
Best part
Hanekom admits that he loves the feeling he gets when he sees how impressed people are with his work. "It’s nice to know that other people see the work that you do."
His motto as a graphic designer is that there are three responses to a piece of design – yes, no and wow! Wow is the one to aim for.
