Christian Amweenye’s formula for success at the MVA Fund

From the quiet village of Akuniihole in the Oshana region to the top floors of finance, Christian Amweenye has walked a path marked by hard work, learning and purpose. Raised by his late grandmother, Kuku Sofia Oiva, he grew up with strong values that shaped his professional path.Amweenye attended Gabriel Taapopi Secondary School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance, a professional qualification in investment analysis and portfolio management, and a master’s degree in finance and investments. Today, he serves as the senior manager for finance and investments at the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund.“My job allows me to protect financial resources and make decisions that benefit everyone. Outside of work, I enjoy being with my family and spending time farming,” Amweenye said.Crucial support On the day of his first graduation in April 2014 at Safari Hotel, he received a life-changing phone call from the MVA Fund inviting him to an interview for an internship position. He interviewed the next day and started work immediately after being selected.“Through hard work, commitment to learning and support from the executive leadership team, I rose through every role in the finance department until I reached my current position,” Amweenye said.A typical workday includes financial research, analysis and providing strategic advice to the team. “If I haven’t worked on Microsoft Excel that day, I feel like I’ve robbed my employer,” he joked.The senior finance manager believes that keeping up to date with relevant matters, organising tasks by urgency and preparing in advance are key to performing well. “Before I leave the office each day, I plan for tomorrow,” he said.Passion, teamwork drive success Working in a supportive environment, especially with the finance unit and leadership team, pushes him to be his best, Amweenye said.He believes his greatest strengths are his determination and willingness to ask for help when needed.“I don’t give up until I achieve results. But I must admit, if I’m not well prepared, I don’t deliver. When I am prepared, I meet expectations with excellence.”One of his proudest moments has been receiving the CEO Award of Excellence, not once, but twice. Amweenye also leads a team that ensures the MVA Fund prepares its audited financial statements internally and on time, a rare achievement among public entities.Having started work at a young age, he said he understands the struggles of balancing work, studies and personal life.Amweenye’s advice to young professionals is simple but powerful: "Remain calm, focus on what matters and always make time to study. When given an opportunity to learn or work, give it your all.”He recently became a certified business accountant in practice and a special independent reviewer. He also completed certification in International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) and continues his studies with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
