ChiNamibia transforms youth through arts education

ChiNamibia Arts Education for Development is a Namibian non-governmental organisation founded by Kapenangutjiua Vetira in 2013 to use arts and culture as tools for education, empowerment and youth development, particularly among children and young people from disadvantaged communities.The organisation was established after graduates of the College of the Arts recognised the potential of the performing arts to build leadership, confidence and opportunities for the next generation.Founded on the belief that creativity can transform lives, ChiNamibia works throughout the school year with structured arts programmes for children from Monday to Thursday and youth sessions on Fridays.The organisation supports schools, youth groups, emerging artists, and community leaders by providing training in dance, drama, music, visual arts, storytelling, and cultural preservation.ChiNamibia’s mission is to use arts education and cultural expression as powerful tools to educate, empower, and develop children and young people, especially those from disadvantaged communities, by nurturing creativity, confidence, leadership, and life skills that prepare them to contribute positively to society.The organisation reaches thousands of young people through classes, workshops, festivals, performances, and international cultural exchanges. Participants gain practical and life skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership, public speaking, and entrepreneurship, helping them prepare for careers in education, media, tourism, and the creative industries.ChiNamibia also works closely with partners such as UNESCO, the National Arts Council of Namibia, and the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture, along with other local and international cultural organisations. These partnerships strengthen mentorship, exchange programmes, and professional development opportunities.Despite challenges such as limited funding, transport costs, and resource shortages, the organisation continues to grow through collaboration and community support. Many former participants have become teachers, performers, and youth leaders, showing the long-term impact of arts education.Looking ahead, ChiNamibia aims to expand arts access across Namibia and create more opportunities in the creative sector. Its vision is to raise a generation of confident, skilled, and socially responsible young leaders who use creativity to solve problems, preserve culture, and drive positive change in their community.
