When the ocean speaks through poetry

Kimberly Zimunya, a talented poet from Duneside High School, draws inspiration from the growing neglect of our environment.On 6 September, she wrote her thought-provoking poem “Under the Deep Blue Sea”, which she completed two days later. Through her words, Kimberly hopes to awaken awareness about the urgent need to protect our oceans and marine life.Her poem paints a vivid picture of the ocean - once full of life, now fading beneath the weight of human greed. She highlights the dangers of overfishing and pollution, yet reminds us that “the ocean is our hope, our anchor and strength.” Her words reflect a deep sense of care and responsibility towards nature.Beyond that, Kimberly’s poem carries a powerful message. It reflects humanity’s tendency to overlook other forms of life simply because they cannot walk on two limbs or have a voice to speak up. We often focus solely on our own lives, forgetting that life exists beneath the ocean floor; life we are slowly destroying, leaving it in hopelessness, a cry heard by few, drowned out by the noise of those who treat it as mere information, never worth acting upon.Kimberly’s voice proves that even young writers can make waves in protecting the world we share.
