The My Zone team visited Okahandja Secondary School and asked learners whether they think the N$16.8 billion allocated to basic education is enough to fulfil the needs of the country's education system.

I personally think the budget is not enough. Currently we do not have textbooks and the money should be used to acquire more books. The money should also be used to keep the environment clean.

The money is not enough due to what we have seen so far in school. In my subjects, I have accounting and math textbooks, but I don’t have a business textbook. We are currently budgeting for a school bus with money we don’t have. Each learner has to contribute N$150 and we are waiting for the government to add money to buy the bus.

I don’t think the money is enough because some learners receive assignments that require research. But they have no access to technology at home. There are not enough computers at school, learners are sharing textbooks and they stay far away from each other.

I don't think the money given for the school budget is enough because the computers at school are not enough for all the learners. For our school, we need a school bus as we don’t have one. The learners' representative council is currently planning a fundraiser to raise money for our school bus, and I don’t think it will be enough.

Basically, the budget is not enough. Our schools are already struggling to buy textbooks and in the north, there are not enough schools as some learners are being taught under a tree.

Namibia has a lot of schools that need to be repainted. There are also learners who need to pay school fees that are compulsory. There are learners being taught under the trees. Schools that are repainted are being vandalised and we are going through that process of constantly repainting. The money won’t be enough. Will the money also be enough for all the teachers? I don’t think so, as we are a developing country that needs to advance our education system.
