The University of the Western Cape (UWC) recently hosted a Namibia Alumni Engagement luncheon, bringing together former students for a day of reconnection, networking and reflection on their shared academic journey.

The UWC rector and vice-chancellor, Professor Robert Balfour, addressed alumni on the university’s vision, growth and ongoing commitment to strengthening its global community.

Joining him was Professor Anesh Singh, director of institutional advancement at UWC, who emphasised the importance of alumni relations in shaping the institution’s future.

In his address, Singh outlined the university’s efforts to reconnect with its alumni, many of whom have been away from the institution for years. “This engagement is not only about bringing you back to the university, but also about creating meaningful connections with industry, communities and society at large,” he said.

Singh further highlighted UWC’s growth and transformation, calling on alumni to play an active role in mobilising support, driving innovation and making an impact within the Namibian context.

Singh also announced the establishment of regional alumni chapters as a way of formalising structures of engagement beyond social groups. “We are asking for a local organising committee of seven volunteers to form a Namibia Chapter that will allow for stronger, more impactful interactions with this community,” he said.

Adding to the voices was alumnus Keanu Ennes, one of the youngest attendees at the luncheon and a UWC law graduate. “It is a great honour to be here, meeting people from different industries and years. My experience at the university was exceptional, and this event gives me the chance to connect and see what opportunities lie ahead,” Ennes shared.

The event provided a platform for alumni to engage in open dialogue, reflect on the university’s evolution, and explore opportunities to contribute to its continued success. It marked an important step in deepening the relationship between UWC and its Namibian alumni, reaffirming the institution’s belief that its graduates remain an integral part of its history.
