UNAS, ICAN complete six-region accounting promo tour

The University of Namibia Accounting Society (UNAS), in partnership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Namibia (ICAN), successfully concluded its annual Accounting Promotional Tour, which took place from 15 to 17 July. This year’s initiative spanned six regions, namely Otjozondjupa, Omusati, Ohangwena, Oshikoto, Kavango West and Kavango East.The objective was to introduce high school learners to the vast and rewarding opportunities within the accounting profession. Through a series of presentations and interactive engagements, learners received valuable insights into academic pathways, professional qualifications, and the critical role financial literacy plays in everyday life.However, the tour went far beyond information sharing. It became a meaningful journey of empowerment for both the learners and the representatives involved. At each school, the team encountered a generation marked by curiosity, potential, and a desire for guidance. What was shared was not merely accounting knowledge, but also visibility, representation, and the affirmation that learners’ dreams are valid and attainable, regardless of their background.“This tour gave me so much information about the course I’m interested in and helped me understand what universities I can apply to this year to start my journey in accounting,” said Makena Kambanda, a learner from Otjiwarongo.The enthusiasm and engagement from learners were evident throughout the tour. Meaningful interactions with university students and young professionals provided learners with relatable role models, while their questions signalled a genuine interest in exploring future careers in accounting, finance, auditing, and related fields.Pursue with purpose“To any learner considering a career in accounting, pursue it with purpose. The journey may be demanding, but the reward lies not only in the qualification, but in the ability to view the world through the lens of ethics, responsibility, and impact. Start now. Ask questions. Seek out mentors. Be curious. And above all, know that you belong in this profession just as much as anyone else.”UNAS President Jimmy Mulokoshi reflected on the efforts behind the initiative: “A great deal of planning went into this tour; months of preparation, strategy sessions, logistical coordination, school engagement, and content development. Behind the scenes, the teams from ICAN and UNAS dedicated time, energy, and passion to ensure the success of this outreach. It was never just about moving from one school to the next; it was about creating an experience where every learner felt seen, heard and inspired.“Every moment was worth it. The long hours and extensive travel were overshadowed by what we experienced on the ground: learners leaning forward with interest, asking thoughtful questions, and beginning to envision new possibilities for themselves. That level of impact cannot be quantified; it is something you feel in the atmosphere, in the energy of the room, and in the spark of realisation in a student’s eyes.”This year’s tour reaffirmed the importance of presence, mentorship, and representation, particularly in underserved communities. It highlighted that real, sustainable change begins with showing up and investing in the potential of young people.Through this initiative, UNAS and ICAN continue to lay the foundation for a stronger, more inclusive accounting profession - one that is not only driven by technical excellence but also by vision, empathy, and a commitment to shaping Namibia’s future financial leaders.
