Taking Cambridge by the horns

On 16 January 2025, our school marked yet another important milestone: The Grade 11s of 2024 received their IGCSE results (a renowned International British curriculum, which our school adopted the previous year). This was the first group to do so, and they did not disappoint!

Twenty-eight learners received at least one A*, and many more performed exceptionally well, with many achieving A, B, and C grades. Our school cannot be prouder, and we applaud the diligence and determination of the new Grade 12s!

I had the opportunity to talk to one of our Top Achievers, Nika van Aswegen. She excelled by receiving a whopping 6 A* - one in each of her subjects! To find out how she achieved such fantastic results, she explained to me that you have to be confident and trust in yourself and your abilities and simply tell yourself to ‘give it your all’ and that ‘the effort one puts in equals the results one gets.’

In addition, to understand the logistics of planning for an exam, Nika said that she made herself a study schedule in which she outlined what she wanted to study for the day and challenged herself to complete this daily task at all costs – even if it meant studying for 12 hours a day!

Nika advises the current Grade 11s to go through past papers, especially from online resources, as well as start studying early enough, for example, for the Mock Exams in June, in order to ensure that one processes the information already and that revision will not be as difficult in October and November.

Lastly, when I asked Nika about her personal experience tackling the IGCSE syllabus, she said that it is challenging, but that it also prepares you for the best possible future.

"It helps you acquire writing and thinking skills, and that ultimately makes the syllabus worthwhile!"

With this, Curro Windhoek Gymnasium experienced yet another breakthrough in its academic journey, and in this way, successfully upholds its motto of “Teaching a new lifestyle – building a better future.”
