Pupkewitz Motors: Apprenticeship and training programmes 2013-2021
Pupkewitz Motors has established strategic partnerships with the Commercial Advancement Training Scheme (CATS) and the Namibia Training Authority (NTA) to ensure we contribute to the skills development of young Namibians who can work in various industries, including the motoring industry. This is also important for the inclusion and elevation of the girl child in the technical and vocational sectors. Through our CATS initiative that commenced in 2013 and is still actively running, a total of 23 trainees have been enrolled and 16 have successfully completed their training, with two still in training currently.
Of these 16 trainees, a total of 11 trainees are women, making up 69% of the success rate. All our trainees who have successfully completed the training are appointed permanently within the group. Five of those employees have been promoted to supervisory positions to date.
During 2018, our mechanical apprenticeship pilot started in collaboration with the NTA and Windhoek Vocational Training Centre. From the 11 apprentices enrolled for the first intake, three completed the three-year programme in June, of which one is a woman. They will soon be appointed at our dealerships on a permanent basis. Following the pilot project in 2018, the next intake of 14 apprentices took place in 2019 through the Okakarara Vocational Training Centre, of which eight are still in training and are due to graduate in 2022.
Furthermore, to these strategic partnerships, Pupkewitz Motors has successfully implemented the new graduate trainee programme in 2021 and our graduate trainee will complete her 18-month programme in December, whereafter she will be employed on a permanent basis in her area of completed studies based on her exceptional performance to date. The second intake for this programme will take place in January 2023.
Lastly, as part of the training and upskilling of our internal staff, supervisors and managers attended an intense leadership development programme presented by the Franklin Covey Institute. As part of the continuation of these efforts, all 50 of the staff will attend different short courses over 12 months (July 2022 to June 2023) based on their personal development plans. 32% of the total members are women.
All in all, Pupkewitz Motors has achieved a 70% success rate pertaining to the successful completion of our traineeship and development programmes, with a total of 99 trainees going through these programmes from 2018 until 2021.
