Naomi Raad (14), an equestrian competitor from Windhoek Gymnasium, participated in the Old Mutual Development Showjumping competition held at Auas View Stables in Windhoek last weekend.
Riding her beloved horse Bag Bag Dorian, Raad competed in multiple classes ranging from 70 centimetres to one metre.
While she did not achieve the results she had hoped for, she remains determined and focused to improve her skills and compete at a higher level in future. She described the competition as a valuable learning experience and a great way to kick off the year on a positive note.
According to Raad, success in showjumping is not just about skill and technique, but also about the bond between rider and horse. She emphasised the importance of remaining calm and focused during competitions, as a rider's nerves can easily affect the performance of their horse.
Raad also highlighted the significance of consistent practice and dedication in honing her abilities as an equestrian athlete.
"You must convince yourself that everything will be okay and that you and your horse will get through it together. It is important to trust each other because if you do not, your horse will get nervous, which might be detrimental for your performance," she said.
Despite facing stiff competition from experienced riders, Raad demonstrated maturity and sportsmanship throughout the event. Her passion for showjumping and commitment to continuous improvement were evident to all who watched her compete.
As she sets her sights on future competitions and endeavours, she remains grateful for the support and encouragement she has received from her family, coaches and fellow equestrians.
