Milano Gogol leads the way for Windhoek's youth

At just 16 years old, Milano Richard Gogol is to take on the role of Windhoek's junior mayor - a position that allows him to represent nearly 200 000 young people in the city. A grade 11 learner at Curro Windhoek Gymnasium, Milano is no stranger to leadership, having served as a class captain for five consecutive years and as editor of his school newspaper, IMAGO.Milano is now ready to take his passion for student empowerment to the next level. Leadership and changeFor Milano, being junior mayor is both an honour and a responsibility. "I have huge shoes to fill," he acknowledges, "but I believe that with determination and cooperation, we can bring about the change the youth needs and deserves."His leadership approach is guided by three key pillars: Attendance, partnership and success.One of Milano’s main concerns is child homelessness in Windhoek. "Too many young individuals are seen begging on the streets instead of being in school," he says. He is determined to address this issue by working with the senior City Council and external stakeholders. Additionally, he wants to raise awareness about the junior Council’s role so that more young people can voice their concerns and get involved in shaping their city’s future. InspirationMilano draws inspiration from global figures such as Nelson Mandela, John F. Kennedy, and Barack Obama. However, he takes particular pride in Namibia’s leaders, including President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and the late presidents Hage Geingob and Sam Nujoma. He believes that young leaders like himself must learn from these role models to help shape a better Namibia. "Many say we are the leaders of tomorrow, but I believe we are the leaders of today," Milano asserts. He encourages his peers to take initiative, whether in student leadership or community projects. His message to the youth is simple but powerful: "Do it! Nothing and no one can stop you."As he prepares for his official inauguration in mid-April, Milano is already setting ambitious plans in motion. He hopes to focus on a specific youth issue each month, ensuring a meaningful and measurable impact.With his dedication and strategic approach, Windhoek’s youth can look forward to a leader who not only listens but takes action.
