Journey to becoming a quantity surveyor

My name is Elvis Chaka, a first-year quantity surveying student at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST). When I tell most people about this course, they are misinformed as they do not know what it actually is. A quantity surveyor is a construction industry professional with expert knowledge on construction costs and contracts. In addition, a qualified professional quantity surveyor is known as a chartered surveyor in a few countries around the world. That is what I am working towards with the choice of my current studies. Additionally, this is what I mean when I state that I am study this course. My experience with this course has been okay thus far, but the assignments are starting to stress me out. School is not as easy as I thought it would be. I had to give up some of my hobbies for this course, and have noticed my free time diminishing over time as the course gets more difficult. I am constantly trying to keep up with the different things I am taught in order to just survive and make it through my first semester, even though it is proving to be quite difficult task for me. Moreover, the movies lied! They created such a huge perception of universities for me and that all died when the moment actually arrived in real life. I did not attract as many girls automatically when I walked through the gates like in the movies. University is a jungle in which each individual fends for themselves in hopes to obtain the degree after three or four years. However, this comes after dedication and hard work. School is harder than I thought. The honeymoon period is over, and I do not enjoy coming to school as much. I come to school to ensure that the dream I have for myself is lived up to, hence my push to never give up because nothing is ever easy or handed over to you on a silver platter. I am grateful to have made it to NUST and understand that I have been blessed with an opportunity that many wish to have, and that is my silver lining. Overall, I would rate the experience a solid 7/10, and the only way you get this experience is through hard work.
