For the love of content creation
I am Prime-Rose Harases, a Namibian singer-songwriter who is currently a student at the Namibian University of Science and Technology (NUST). I am currently studying journalism and media technology and I’m in my second year. This course was not what I had initially thought or even planned out for myself to study. However, by fate, my parents brought it to my attention and since then I’ve loved it.
I had a natural pull towards content creation, music and social media all my life so my parents thought it be best to recommend this course to me.
Going into my first year, I had no expectations but was pleasantly surprised. I was filming music videos for my first music project at the time and was learning the ins and outs of video production and editing.
Skills gained
Some of the modules this course offers, such as broadcast journalism, multimedia and design and audiovisual media, truly broadened my outlook on music creation and music video production. I was learning about the importance of representation on screen and how powerful what we see online can be on the subconscious mind.
Struggles
Being a student - regardless of what course you’re studying - can be difficult. Some struggles I’ve faced are the demanding deadlines, group work and keeping up with the high-pressure routine of being a university student. Constantly being overloaded with work and information can be overwhelming on your mental health as well. So, that’s been something I’ve been trying to navigate and manoeuvre. Being kinder to myself and my mental health, especially when experiencing academic setbacks, has been key.
Advice
Advice I’d give to anyone trying to study this course is to be open-minded to experiencing a new paradigm shift. This course has been instrumental to opening multiple doors I wouldn’t have opened on my own and shifted my perspective on how I view the world on the internet. Most importantly, research is also an added advantage - you would not want to get into a course that you are not passionate about.
