Financial advances for Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level entrants

A call for AS level students
Precious Nghitaunapo
The University of Namibia (Unam) recently introduced a new initiative offering financial benefits to qualifying students who apply with Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level. The benefits include a choice of no registration fees, priority housing or a 10% discount on your first year.

The university mentioned that five options were proposed for consideration and were presented for university council approval, which included the discount incentive, a book voucher incentive, photocopying/printing credit allowance incentive, hostel incentive and laptop incentive, of which the accommodation and discount incentive prevailed.

According to marketing officer Simon Namesho, the university has recorded a decline in registrations of school-leaving students due to the fact that it does not admit students with only grade 11 results for bachelor’s degree and honour’s degree courses.

The university has made amendments as a form of traction, adding that: “Unam remains the choice for many Namibian students, as well as international students”.

“Locally, Unam recognises that it faces competition of attracting and recruiting the best students from a relatively small pool of about 9 000 set to write AS examination in 2022.”

The incentives will apply to all privately funded students as well as Namibian Students Financial Assistant Fund (NSFAF) beneficiaries, regardless of the course they are applying for.

The priority housing will only include prioritising students who apply for Unam hostel accommodation and not include any discount incentive in this package. The discount incentive will include a 10% discount on tuition fees for the first year only, of which full payment will be required from students for the following year.

The option of not paying registration fees will only be applicable for the first year registration and not for hostel registration fees.
