Exploring careers: Windhoek Gymnasium students’ job shadowing experience

Chanté Tredoux
Choosing a career can be daunting, but at Curro Windhoek Gymnasium, students get an exciting opportunity to explore their future professions through a job shadowing project.

This exciting program allows learners to experience the real world by stepping out of the classroom and into various industries.

The Grade 11 students received four months to complete this detailed task at any institution of their choice. Their skills were put to the test by having to complete a report, reviewing their experience during the three-day shadowing period. The outcome was fascinating; from accountants to lawyers and even the next Christiaan Barnard! By observing professionals in action, students gained insight into workplace environments and job expectations.

Beyond career exposure, job shadowing helped students develop skills, such as communication, professionalism and adaptability. It showed students their strengths and weaknesses. By doing so, it helped them to address their weaknesses to further better themselves and prepare them for the best possible future!

Overall, the feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive. The grade 11 Gimmies were pleased to take part in such an enabling experience. Especially because it was not only a learning opportunity but also an extremely enjoyable opportunity to connect with their future self and to get a taste of what the future might hold for them.

Other students realised that their job shadowing experience was not what they had expected, which created a chance to explore new opportunities.

Job shadowing proved to be an invaluable experience, equipping students with knowledge, skills and confidence for their future careers. By stepping into the professional world, learners were able to make informed decisions about their paths and develop a greater appreciation for the effort and dedication required in different industries. As they continue their academic journey, these experiences will serve as a strong foundation for their future success!
