The unsung professionals protecting animal health

When people think of veterinary care, veterinarians are often the first professionals who come to mind. But behind effective animal-health services is a wider team of skilled para-veterinary professionals whose work is essential, yet often goes unnoticed. In Namibia, these professionals form an important part of the veterinary system and are required to register with the Namibia Veterinary Council. Many work as Animal Health Technicians within the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS), playing a particularly important role in a country where livestock farming supports rural livelihoods and contributes to the economy.Animal Health Technicians work closely with farmers and their animals, assisting with disease surveillance and control, vaccination programmes, animal-health inspections, sample collection and the early detection of outbreaks.Their work often takes them long distances into the field, where they deal with everything from routine livestock health problems to serious infectious diseases that can threaten entire farming communities and disrupt trade.More than treatmentTheir contribution extends beyond treating sick animals. It supports food security, livestock production, trade and public health, while strengthening Namibia’s ability to respond to animal-disease emergencies. The para-veterinary profession also extends beyond livestock farming. Veterinary nurses and technical assistants work in private veterinary clinics and alongside wildlife veterinarians. Their skills are increasingly important in wildlife health and conservation, where they may assist with the capture, examination, treatment and rehabilitation of animals.Although their names rarely make headlines, these professionals bring practical skills, knowledge and dedication to the daily work of animal care.International Animal/Veterinary Technicians Week is therefore more than a celebration of a profession. It is a reminder that animal health depends on teamwork.Namibia’s Animal Health Technicians and other registered para-veterinary professionals deserve recognition for their contribution to farmers, veterinarians, wildlife specialists and the animals in their care.Their work deserves appreciation not only during this week, but throughout the year. – Contributed by the Namibia Veterinary Technicians Association (NVTA).
