The price of moving Namibia

Namibians are about to pay nearly N$9 more for a litre of petrol than they did in March, and N$11.23 more for diesel. From Wednesday, petrol prices in Walvis Bay will rise by N$2 to N$28.58 a litre, while diesel 50ppm will increase by N$3 to N$30.86.Petrol will now cost N$5.58 more than its May 2024 price of N$23, while diesel will be N$6.76 above its November 2022 price of N$24.10.The pace of the increase is particularly striking. It took about 15 years, from mid-2007 to mid-2022, for petrol to rise from roughly N$7 to N$20 a litre. In 2026, it has increased by about N$9 in just eight months.Since March, petrol prices have risen by 46% and diesel by 57%.The impact on motorists is immediate. Filling a 50-litre tank with petrol will cost N$1,429 from Wednesday, compared with N$979 in March. For diesel motorists, the same tank will cost N$1,543, up from N$981.50.The purchasing power of the Namibian dollar at the pump has also deteriorated sharply. N$100 will now buy about 3.5 litres of petrol or 3.2 litres of diesel, down from approximately 5.1 litres of either fuel in March. That represents 31.5% less petrol and 36.4% less diesel for the same amount of money. For commuters travelling between towns and Windhoek, the increases are even more punishing.A motorist commuting from Rehoboth to Windhoek and back five days a week covers approximately 3,600km over four weeks, assuming a distance of 90km each way.In a vehicle consuming 10 litres per 100km, the petrol bill for those 20 working days rises from about N$7,050 at March prices to N$10,290 at Wednesday's prices. That is an additional N$3,240 over four working weeks. For someone travelling from Okahandja, assuming a distance of 70km each way, the monthly bill increases from approximately N$5,480 to N$8,000 – an additional N$2,520.These estimates use Walvis Bay prices. Motorists inland face even higher pump prices. Why diesel is the bigger economic concernWhile petrol increases are immediately visible to motorists, diesel carries a much wider economic consequence.Diesel accounts for approximately 70% of Namibia's combined petrol and diesel consumption. It powers much of the country's freight and logistics network, moving agricultural produce from farms to markets and imported goods from the Port of Walvis Bay to inland destinations. The increase therefore extends well beyond motorists who drive diesel vehicles.Consider a loaded truck travelling from Walvis Bay to Windhoek and consuming 160 litres of diesel. Its fuel bill was approximately N$3,140 in March. From Wednesday, that cost will rise to about N$4,940.That is an additional N$1,800 for a single journey.Higher transport costs put pressure on the entire supply chain, with potential implications for the prices of basic commodities such as bread and maize meal. The widening price gap between the two fuels reinforces the trend. Diesel was already 5 cents more expensive per litre than petrol in March. From Wednesday, the difference will increase to N$2.28.Diesel has also traded above petrol during previous oil-price shocks, including those of 2008 and 2022.The broader concern is how long businesses can absorb these additional costs before passing them on to consumers. The pump price is the most visible part of Namibia's fuel shock. Its wider economic cost will be felt in household budgets, commuter expenses, business operating costs and the prices of goods. As fuel becomes more expensive, the pressure on consumers and businesses intensifies, while the government's ability to cushion the economy through fiscal interventions becomes an increasingly important consideration.
