The intersection of luxury and power
A first look inside the GWM Tank 500
STAFF REPORTER
From its panoramic sunroof to ventilated massaging seats, Diana calls it “a million-dollar car” and after seeing the features, you’ll understand why.
The GWM Tank 500’s interior is nothing short of showstopping. Stepping inside, Diana is immediately drawn to the full-size panoramic sunroof that stretches all the way to the back, flooding the cabin with natural light. “This car isn’t just built for driving, it’s built for living,” Diana quips.
Wooden trim accents, touch-sensitive lighting, and ambient stars that change colour set the tone for a luxurious atmosphere. The 14” infotainment touchscreen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the Infinity sound system and heads-up display with augmented reality ensure drivers are fully immersed and always alert.
Passenger comfort takes centre stage, with heated and ventilated front seats, a cooled storage box for drinks, and even wireless charging. Rear passengers aren’t forgotten either, they have individual climate control and ample legroom. “You even get a vanity mirror with lights, perfect for your selfies or makeup,” Diana jokes, calling on all “passenger princesses” to unite.
But don’t let the plush interiors fool you. This SUV is a powerhouse on the road. Ronnie reveals that under the bonnet lies a 2.0-litre turbo petrol hybrid engine, delivering a jaw-dropping 255kW of power and 648Nm of torque. The hybrid system intelligently switches between electric and petrol power depending on speed and load, helping maintain a respectable fuel consumption rate of 8.5L/100km - impressive for a seven-seater, full-size SUV.
And yes, it’s a true off-roader too: 4x4 capabilities, rear and front differential lock, 4L mode, and multiple drive modes mean this beast is as at home in sand dunes as it is on city streets. “You’re not scared to go anywhere,” says Ronnie. “Mud, gravel, sand. Bring it on.”
He laughs, adding: “You won’t even care about the fuel. Once you see the tech, the comfort justifies itself.”
The GWM Tank 500 is loaded with smart features, including:
• Augmented reality heads-up display
• Lane assist & blind spot monitoring
• Intelligent adaptive cruise control
• Self-charging hybrid system (not plug-in)
• Dual-zone climate control
• Massaging front seats
• 80-litre fuel tank with up to 940km range
