Telecom vows network stability

The Board of Directors of Telecom Namibia has assured information minister Emma Theofelus it is working to ensure stability and a smooth leadership transition, following the resignation of three senior executives.The board also confirmed the departures of the Chief Commercial Officer and Chief Finance Officer, who have formally tendered their resignations, effective 30 June 2026 and 30 September 2026 respectively.The assurance came during the board's quarterly meeting with Theofelus.Theofelus told the board it had the ministry's full support. "Your success is our success," she said. "You carry the telecommunications infrastructure backbone of this country and therefore cannot afford to lose ground."She also raised the issue of copper theft, saying a meeting had been held with stakeholders to explore ways the government could strengthen legislation and enforcement against the growing problem.The issue has already prompted action at operational level. Telecom Namibia signed a partnership with Demshi Investment Holdings in June to accelerate fibre rollout and replace copper infrastructure in high-risk areas, a move aimed at cutting vandalism and improving network reliability.The partnership forms part of Telecom Namibia’s five-year integrated strategic business plan, which focuses on improving customer experience through infrastructure development and strategic collaborations. It also aligns with the company’s 2025/26 annual operating plan, which prioritises faster fibre deployment and digital transformation.Through the agreement, Telecom Namibia will use Demshi’s open-access fibre network to provide high-speed internet services to residential and business customers. Demshi will be responsible for network deployment, maintenance and the installation of passive fibre infrastructure.Board members, appointed for a five-year term, signed performance agreements with the minister at the meeting. The agreements are meant to strengthen accountability and ensure the board delivers on strategic priorities set by the ministry.
