Stricter animal product import rules

The Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) has announced a new directive for all travellers entering Namibia from South Africa, reinforcing strict import controls on animal products to prevent the spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).

The new rules supersede all previous arrangements, meaning travellers can no longer bring any products from cloven-hoofed animals into Namibia for personal use without a valid veterinary import permit. This includes a wide range of goods, such as raw, cooked, smoked, dried, or processed meat, as well as milk and milk products. Hay and other restricted materials are also included under the ban.

The DVS urges travellers to apply for the necessary permits through the Import Office in Windhoek well in advance of their journey. A warning sign has been erected at the border, reminding travellers that these new regulations are enforceable by law.
