Record crowds flock to Henties Bay Visfees
All roads lead to coastal festival
Thousands of visitors enjoyed a festive Henties Bay Visfees over the weekend, celebrating the town's community spirit and giving a boost to the local economy.
An estimated 6 000 people streamed through the gates of the Henties Bay Visfees over the weekend, making it one of the largest editions the town has seen.
More than 120 stalls lined the festival grounds, offering everything from arts and crafts, clothing, jewellery, camping and fishing gear, and crystals to a wide variety of food, including fish and meat dishes, drinks and homemade snacks.
Live performances by Namibian and South African musicians kept the crowds entertained, while South African comedian Matie van Graan served as master of ceremonies and had the audience in stitches.
“This is how things are supposed to be done. Don’t change anything – just stay as you are,” Van Graan said, praising the spirit of Henties Bay and Namibia.
Festival tents were filled to capacity as visitors enjoyed the food, entertainment and atmosphere. Stallholders said the event provided a welcome and vital platform to sell their products and promote their businesses, calling it important both for the town’s economy and for preparation ahead of the December influx.
The angling competition produced some big catches, with Swakopmund resident Vernon Cloete taking the N$25 000 top prize for a 12.315 kg steenbras.
Henties Bay mayor Lewies Vermaak described the festival as one of the town’s most successful community events to date.
