Paratus backs desert lion protection

Paratus Namibia is supporting the conservation of Namibia's desert-adapted lions by providing satellite connectivity to the Desert Lion Conservation Trust (DLCT) research station at Möwe Bay, helping researchers operate in one of the country's most remote regions.Operating in north-west Namibia, the DLCT monitors the country's desert lion population across vast, inaccessible terrain with little to no mobile network coverage. The satellite connection enables researchers to remain in contact, coordinate field operations and share critical data.The organisation has monitored the region's desert lions for the past two decades. With the population estimated at fewer than 100 animals, conservation efforts focus on reducing human-wildlife conflict as the lions roam across extensive areas that overlap with communal land. The work is undertaken in partnership with local stakeholders and the ministry of environment, forestry and tourism.Connectivity at the Möwe Bay base camp allows researchers to process tracking data and maintain communication with lion rangers operating in areas including Purros and Sesfontein. Early warning systems linked to GPS-collared lions alert rangers when animals enter high-risk areas, helping to reduce conflict while protecting both livestock and the lions.Paratus Group chief development officer Barney Harmse said the company's support extends beyond providing internet access."This is about more than connectivity. It is about enabling conservation and helping the work of the DLCT remain vital and effective. We are proud to support the protection of a unique and vulnerable lion population while helping those on the ground respond where it matters most," he said.Desert Lion Conservation Trust founder Dr Flip Stander said reliable communications are essential for conservation work in such an isolated environment."Having reliable communication at Möwe Bay allows us to coordinate our work, manage data effectively and support rangers in key areas where timely information can make a real difference to the survival of the lions and the wellbeing of local communities," he said.Although real-time connectivity across the field remains challenging, the partnership continues to strengthen conservation efforts in one of the world's harshest environments, supporting both wildlife and the communities that live alongside it.
