Namport social investment fund making a real difference

The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) reaches out to Namibian communities through its social investment fund, established in 2006.The fund focuses on four ideals, which include entrepreneurial and small- and medium enterprise (SME) development, health, quality education and the environment. To date, Namport has invested close to N$25 million in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal number four, regarding quality education, across Namibia.Various investments in the form of donations were made recently. Namport responded to the plight of flood victims by donating life jackets valued at N$210 000 to the Okatjali constituency in the Oshana Region. Receiving the donation, Joseph Mupetami, the regional councillor of the constituency, said it came at the right time. Supporting govt effortsTana Pesat, the manager for corporate communications and chairperson of the fund's working committee, reiterated Namport's commitment to address the plight of community members in Namibia whenever possible. “The assistance is a reflection of the authority’s devotion to help and support government’s efforts in dealing with challenges resulting from floods.” Through the fund, Namport also donated educational material valued at N$10 000 to the Namsov Learn in Peace Centre in Walvis Bay. Isabel Uiramas said learning is a multifaceted discipline. “The toys we received today will not only be used outside at the playground, but can also in the classroom.” Pesat emphasised that Namport - through the fund - is cognisant of the need and importance of early childhood development. “Namport is resolute in playing an active role in proliferating government’s agenda of ensuring that all children enjoy equal opportunities.”Investment in the futureMeanwhile, the fund also donated five desktop computers to Vaalgras Primary School to the value of N$74 880. The goods were received by principal Geraldine Balzer, who expressed her heartfelt gratitude. “The equipment donated will allow learners to gain an understanding of artificial intelligence. Learners have limited exposure and through the donation received from Namport, they gain access to the tools for research, and it becomes possible for them to put theory into practice.” Pesat added that the donation is an investment in thousands of Namibian children who will utilise the equipment over years to come.
