N$2bn road projects completed

Prime Minister Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare has urged the ministry of transport to improve rural access roads, saying better connectivity is essential to supporting livelihoods and economic activity.Ngurare was speaking during the ministry’s second-quarter performance review for the 2026/27 financial year at the Office of the Prime Minister on Monday, where transport minister Veikko Nekundi presented the ministry’s achievements.“When we were in the [Swapo Party] youth league, we used to make demands that gave our leaders grey hair, but now we are the implementers and policymakers; we have no excuse but to deliver,” Ngurare said.The ministry has completed road projects worth nearly N$2 billion, upgraded 210 kilometres of railway infrastructure and exceeded its national aviation safety compliance target.The major road projects include Phase 2A of the Windhoek–Hosea Kutako International Airport dual carriageway, valued at N$949.9 million, and Phase 2B, valued at N$1 billion.The ministry also completed the 23km Omulondo–Oshuuli road at a cost of N$53.4 million, while 210km of the national railway network was upgraded.In aviation, Namibia achieved 80.3% compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation standards, surpassing the National Development Plan 6 target of 75%.Progress towards establishing a new national airline reached 85%, with the initiative remaining a government priority.On state asset management, 114 obsolete government vehicles were auctioned, generating N$9.2 million, while 88 new vehicles were procured at a cost of N$79 million.The ministry also completed a solar photovoltaic expansion that added 42 kilowatt-peak (kWp) of capacity and installed an electric vehicle charging station. Two procurement contracts were awarded to local manufacturers in line with the Cabinet’s local sourcing directive.Government fleet maintenance met its target, with 76% of vehicle repairs carried out internally.Ngurare also called for better coordination between road development and agricultural projects, emphasising the importance of rural feeder roads in supporting communities and economic activity.“Rural feeder roads are key,” he said.
