Low volumes of cargo recorded in April 2022
Export earnings fall by N$3.2 billion
Namibia transported 784 925 tonnes of cargo, compared to 1 142 116 tonnes and 801 118 tonnes that were transported in March 2022 and April 2021, respectively.
Namibia recorded low volumes of cargo for consignments transported during April 2022 via rail, air and sea cargo.
Hence, the transport composite cargo index recorded a decline on a monthly basis of 31.3%, compared to a growth of 3.9% registered in March 2022, according to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA).
When compared to April 2021, the index declined by 2.0%.
The Agency’s trade statistics indicated that Namibia lost about N$3.2 billion in export earnings during April 2022. The value of exports stood at N$5.5 billion, down from N$8.7 billion recorded in March 2022.
More specifically, the rail cargo index declined by 20.0% on a monthly basis for the period under review. The decline registered on a monthly basis was driven by the low volumes of predominantly copper concentrate, sulphuric acid, earth, ash and gravel transported through rail. Given these developments, a total of 98 815 tonnes of goods were transported via rail during April 2022, NSA said
In addition, the air cargo index declined by 15.7% during for April 2022. The decline recorded on a monthly basis mainly emerged from low volumes of cargo for paints and varnishes, preserved fish, fruit juice, vegetable juices, manufactured tobacco, sunflower seed, cotton seed oil, other fixed vegetable fats and oils transported via air. For the period under review, a total of 293 tonnes of goods were transported via air, NSA pointed out.
Moreover, the sea cargo index that consists of sea-landed, sea trans-shipped and sea-shipped recorded a decline of 48.4% in April 2022, downward from a growth of 8.9% registered for March 2022, NSA said.
Road
The volumes of cargo transported through road posted positive growth during April 2022. A total of N$2.0 billion, representing 36.6% share of total exports left the country by road during April.
The road cargo index increased by 5.6% for April 2022, an improvement from a reduction of 12.9% registered a month earlier. However, the index declined year-on-year, registering a reduction of 19.3% when compared to a growth of 125.7% recorded during the corresponding period of 2021.
The increase recorded on a monthly basis was mainly accredited to the high volumes of predominantly petroleum oils, sunflower seed, rice, maize corn, wheat and muslin, milk and cream, wine of fresh grapes, vegetable juices and fruit juices transported via road.
For the period under review, a total of 313 006 tonnes of goods were transported via road.
