Hosea Kutako Airport to get new terminal, air bridges by 2030

Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA) is slated for a major transformation with a new terminal and air bridges planned to meet global standards.Namibia Airports Company (NAC) CEO Bisey /Uirab announced the upgrades, part of the government’s sixth National Development Plan (NDP6), on the Business 7 show this week.The project aims to modernise Namibia’s primary aviation hub by 2030 to handle growing passenger numbers and enhance facilities.“What we have in mind with NDP6 and beyond is to tackle various airports in order of priority. In the first level of priority, we have HKIA since it is our main airport. However, the existing facilities, in addition to the work that we did two to three years ago, do not fully meet international requirements,” /Uirab said. “We have started to work on establishing a new terminal at HKIA. In terms of our estimations, come 2030, the current airport facilities will not be able to carry the numbers that will be going through our airport. That is why we must build a completely new terminal,” he said. According to /Uirab, the new terminal will feature key infrastructure that is seen at other airports internationally. “This terminal will be modern. It will have all the facilities that a new airport should have, including commercial facilities, hotel accommodation, proper logistics facilities, etc. HKIA does not have air bridges where people can move from their terminal building to the aeroplane,” /Uirab said. Legacy issues did not allow the NAC to upgrade it to modern standards, /Uirab said, hence the planned upgrades. “The current infrastructure does not allow us to have such facilities installed at the airport. So, the new terminal that we'll be looking at will make sure that we have a modern airport to take care of,” he said. According to /Uirab, the planned upgrades are still in early stages. “We are engaging with the government. Obviously, as NAC alone, we will not be able to do it. Besides the government, we are considering various options for financing this development. What I am sure of is that these developments must take place, and it is critical for a country to take on these developments as soon as possible.” Watch more here //q.my.na/E79O
